I have had this now for about a month, using it as much as 12 hours a day each and every day and must say that the sound I receive from it is exceptional. The large woofer (nearly the size of the main speakers combined) gives all the bass that I desire (and I love good, deep bass) while the sound production from the main speakers is as accurate as can be. I most definitely give this stereo a glowing review and recommend it to anyone who is looking for a bookshelf system.
In response to those who say that the cords are too short, all I can say is that this is a bookshelf stereo: it is meant to go into or on top of a bookcase, not be spread around the room. It is there for providing sound, not a full home theater experience. If what one wants is a home theater, get a home theater system. One must use the right tools for the job, after all.
One warning I will give is that the CD player is on the top of the receiver and, as such, one must be careful about applying any pressure to the top when removing the unit from the box and when setting it up. I wish they had made it just a wee bit taller and used a standard front-loading tray instead of a pop-up lid over the CD mechanism but that is the only design snag (not a flaw but just something that should be reconsidered) I see.

For the price it’s good value for the right circumstance. I needed a system for a house party that I could use my iphone to play pandora on. However don’t be fooled by the 550W RMS. It’s certainly not RMS. My old 2x55W RMS stereo amp could push about 4x harder I’d say. It’s just loud enough for a house party in a 2br apartment but be careful to stop people turning it all the way up with the dxg (extra bass) setting on as it will distort. If you’re looking for something in a bigger space then this won’t cut it. For normal listening it’s fine though.
Like others have noted the midrange is lacking and the bass can dominate if you don’t turn the dxsg off, like most cheap systems they focus on the bass at the expense of quality. It’s not bad, but for a small room you might be better off with a smaller higher quality system that hasn’t allocated a lot of the budget for the sub.
Minor niggles – it should have an audio input RCA style on the back, the only input is a 3.5mm jack on the front which is unsightly.

I got this system to take to school with me, and it fits in/on the bookshelves perfectly. The sub has a ton of bass, and the speakers easily enough midrange and treble to make it a great sounding stereo. I listen to it over 6 hours every day, basically whenever i’m in my room, and I listen to every kind of music there is (except jazz) I have no complaints. Those who complain about this not having features, it tells you which features it has, buy something else if you don’t like it. Delivers exactly what it says it will and the sound quality is superb. I would def recommend this.

There are alot of good things about this system for those who do not have alot of space or don’t really care about flexability in adjusting to your ear. As a previous reviewer pointed out this is not high end equipment so you can’t expect alot. I bought one for my bedroom and its ok but for the life of me I do not understand why sony did not put a balance conteol on a unit that is supposed to be for someone with limited space.
For my space I can only have the speakers on each end of the wall while my bed etc is on one side which puts one speaker right in front of me and the other to the left about 8 feet. The instructions address this by saying what amounts to arrange your room to the stero if you want balanced sound. What were they thinking??? oh yea $$$$.
The one over ran the other so to compensate I put the one closest to me facing the adejacent wall and now iI cant hear more of the left channel. And yes the wires are very short. I had to cut and splice. I don’t like the plug in on the ends of the speaker wire. Someday they will go bad if you plug and unplug them or some how a wire gets snagged and rips the wire out. Then you can buy a new stereo.
Over all the sound is way to bassy. The speakers themselves have plenty of bass and with the sub on its all bass Needs to have some midrange. The presets are ok but they all seem to be bass heavy,POP setting seems to be the least bass intensive. they could have put in some tone control to fine tune to your taste not theirs. Similar priced brands have it both ways. The sub woofer is not that great, a song with real heavy bass can make it over take every thing and even distort at moderate volume. there is no adjustment other than to turn it off and that control is not on the remote so get up and run while the glass rattles or your neighbor comes over to beat on your door.
The only input jack is a single headphone like mini jack in the front that is a little unsightly if you have your tv (like me)hooked to it. Like alot of other brands in the same price range they could have put a couple rca type in the back
Don’t get me wrong its not horrable but they could have made it more personal of a listening experience with a few cheap controls, instead be happy with what sony thinks you want. Thats sony. Really i’ve had as good sounding portables with better features than this and those didn’t have a so called subwoofer. but thats just me and if you don’t have a ear for good sound or even care about it then you will like this.

Just purchased this system and I am blown away by how well the various componets work and at the quality of the sound. The subwoofer really kicks in great and the highs are clear. If you are looking for a nicely integrated bookshelf or small corner system, this is the real McCoy.
